Race Report: Mason Lake #1
Published by Michael on Mar 07, 2010
This weekend, the PNW race scene roared to a start with the 1st of 3 Mason Lake Road Races - aka: The Mason Lake World Championships. It was day to get used to riding in the peleton again and rekindle those racing sensations. There were many jitters and bumps and I thought - at least until the last 250m of my race - that everyone was going to make it through unscathed. However, there was a terrible crash about 300m-250m to go in my cat3 field.
The guy who crashed fell into me and almost knocked me over, however, I was able to stay upright and recover from the dreadful wobble of doom. I was able to catch back up to the last group of 10 in the final 100m and I finished 4th by the time I crossed the line. Not a bad day. Almost crashing had my adrenaline going though - the sound of it was terrifying. Seriously, there’s nothing more frightening than hearing people scream as they hit the pavement at 35mph wearing only a thin layer of spandex. I’ve been there. I really hate to see others get hurt and I was very dismayed after the 4th ambulance drove by to the crash scene after the race. I sincerely hope that everyone is able to recover 100% from the crash.
I owe a congrats to Breakaway Racing member Daniel C. who raced the cat5 men’s race and finished top 20 today. 84 starters! Unbelievably cool.
Also, I owe another congrats to my friend Jordan Louie who races for Husky Cycling/Hagens Berman. He one the Cat 4 race and got his Cat 3 upgrade. Awesome.
Until next weekend,
Michael
Breakaway Racing in Oregon

Update 2: Nate Pitts also had a great finish in Oregon, placing 5th in the Men’s 5 road race. Awesome job Nate.
Update: Kevin Driscoll also competed in the Cherry Pie Road Race and finished 18th in the Cat4 Men.
Last weekend, Ben Lukes traveled down to Oregon to race in the Cherry Pie Road Race. Ben is the first rider to race for Breakaway Racing and that in itself is super exciting! Despite being caught up in a crash, Ben got up and finished mid-pack, placing 26th out of 50 Cat 5 riders.
This is a good chance to explain how the equation works. First, take the race field size and divide it by Ben’s place: 50/26 = 1.92. Then divide 1.92 by his category: 1.92/5 = $0.38 to SOS Outreach!
Now, $0.38 might not seem like a lot, but dust off that chalkboard because we’re not done calculating. As of now, we have four sponsors that will donate $0.38 to SOS Outreach plus 5 pledgers who will also donate $0.38 to SOS Outreach. So let’s multiply: $0.38 x 9 = $3.42 to SOS Outreach. Sweet.
Breakaway Racing is off to a great start. Thanks Ben!

Breakaway Racing Logo Evolution
Published by Michael on Feb 05, 2010
The Breakaway Racing logo took quite awhile to design. The goal was to create a fun, bright and memorable logo. Logo Symbolism: Blue = the team, Yellow = sponsors, and white = community. The sponsors make it possible for the team to help the community (Blue “B” and white “R”) and that is why the yellow circles the logo and bridges the gap between blue and white in the three stripes.
